
At the time of his death, Capt. Liberto and another officer were pursuing a vehicle when it crashed. An occupant immediately exited the vehicle and opened fire, killing Capt. Liberto and wounding the other officer.
Capt. Liberto, also a decorated US Marine, is remembered as a kind, compassionate man who was dedicated to his family, friends, profession, and all whom he touched. He is survived by his wife, Tra and seven children, Vincent, Joey, Michael, Bailee, Tyler, Dominic, and Victoria.
In November 2019, Messina Street in Mandeville was renamed to Captain Vincent Liberto Jr. Drive in his honor.
